Make sure your website has useful, informative headlines![/caption] H1s are very important. They not only help search engines find your page, they help customers find what they're looking for. That's why it's so important that your H1s contain terms that people search for. If they don't, your pages won't perform successfully in search engines -- and they won't result in robust sales.

Examples of Ineffective H1 Headlines

What does not make an effective H1? Consult the following:
  • Part numbers
  • Product names (that don't contain the keyword)
  • Jargon-heavy terms that real people don't use

How to Make H1s Awesome

Your primary keyword needs to be in your H1 on every page. If you have a page for tool post grinders, your H1 for that page must be "Tool Post Grinders." A subpage for an individual product can have an H1 like this: Series 57 Interchangeable Spindle Tool Post Grinders & Kits. Because it has "tool post grinders" in the title, it will successfully capture searches for that term. But if the H1 said simply, "Series 57" (and believe me, we do see H1s like that sometimes) the page wouldn't capture very much traffic at all.

How to Add H1s

Adding an H1 headline to any page is very simple. You can highlight the keyword and select 'Heading 1" like so: h1 Or, you can access your text in the HTML editor, and enclose the term in H1 tags, thusly: <h1>The Importance of H1 Headlines</h1> If your pages have been underperforming, improving your H1s might just solve the problem.
